Welcome to the Kansas Historic Resources Inventory database! The Kansas Historic Resources Inventory database (KHRI) is administered by the SHPO at the Kansas Historical Society (KSHS). The database is a searchable inventory of the state's surveyed historic properties and is intended to serve as an educational and a reference tool for preservation professionals and the general public.
Users approved by the SHPO staff can log into KHRI and directly enter survey information into the survey database.Users who are not registered can search the inventory files.Users may choose to search for specific properties or may use more general criteria to search for categories such as building types and architectural styles.The database can also be used to simply explore the surveyed historic resources in one's geographic area.
All survey forms should be submitted by entering the information on the online database.Once SHPO staff has approved the online form, the inventory file will be available to the public on the KHRI.Please be sure that all information is as complete and accurate as possible.
Before proceeding with survey
work, please become a registered user, log into KHRI, and carefully read the
Tutorial.The Tutorial available to
logged-in users provides specific digital image requirements as well as

In order to become a registered
user, click on the "Log In" link at the top right corner of the Search page,
then click the link "New users register here" on the log-in page.Once you are registered, you will be able to
log into KHRI and submit surveys.
Registration is free and open to anyone!
Searching the Database
To search the database, click on the "Search" tab at the top of any database page. Searches may be conducted by selecting options from the drop-down menus and/or typing into the blank fields. Data can be entered into any or all of the fields on the Search page. Selecting more fields will produce more refined search results.
A list of the search results will be displayed in the "Search Results" tab. Results can be sorted by clicking on the column headings at the top.Clicking on the inventory number at the left will bring the user to the "Details" tab where the survey information can be viewed.To return to the search results, simply click on the "Search Results" tab at the top of the page.
The "Print to PDF" function may be used while viewing the "Details" of a surveyed property.Clicking on this button will open a new window with a printable version of the property's survey information.Please note: Users must disable popup blockers in order to use this function.
Four tabs are available to users who are accessing KHRI without logging
in.These tabs are located at the top of
the webpage and include Search, Search Results, Details, and Tutorial.Users can navigate between tabs by clicking
on the tab headings.
The Search tab
offers the opportunity to search KSHS's inventory of
over 50,000 surveyed historic properties.The Search page also functions as KHRI's homepage.
When setting the search terms, users can select from one or many of the
fields available.This flexibility
enables users to search in a number of different ways, whether you're looking
for a specific property or property type, searching for properties in a
geographic area, searching for properties constructed during a specific period
of time, or simply browsing to explore
After selecting the search criteria on the Search page and clicking the "Search" button, users will be brought to the Search Results tab where all the records matching the search criteria are displayed in a numbered list.Users can sort the search results using any of the column headings, including Year of Construction, City, County, or Architectural Style. To download search results to an excel spreadsheet, click blue 'Download Results to Excel' at the top right of the screen. Note: this downloaded information is for reference only. To update a record, do so either by editing on KHRI or using the HRI Field Spreadsheet" located under the download tab.
Clicking on the Inventory Number of any of the records displayed on the Search Results page will bring users to the Details page.This page is the new online version of the survey form and includes information such as address, legal description, architectural style, and year of construction, to name a few.The information is organized into separate sections: Location, Description, Owner, Register Status, Survey, Record Review, Images & Documents, and Edit History. The Edit History section allows users to see how the survey form has evolved with links to past versions.
Also present on this page are any digital images, scans, PDFs, or other documents that have been uploaded to the survey form.Clicking on the image thumbnails will open a new window with a full-size version of the image.Clicking on other attachments, such as PDFs, will also open those files in a new window.
Present at the top and bottom of the Details page is the Print to PDF button.Clicking on the Print to PDF button will open a printable version of the survey form in Adobe Reader (hint: be sure to disable your pop-up blocker!).
Users who are not logged into KHRI can access the Tutorial tab for an introduction as well as instructions for searching the database and becoming a registered user.Once logged in, users will be able to access the complete KHRI tutorial, including Step-by-Step instructions for entering survey information on the Enter New page. New users are encouraged to read the Tutorial carefully before using the database.
