Historic Function Remarks: | Clarence (Clare) and Gladys (Glad) Youse purchased the house in 1927 and remodeled what was a smaller house into this house's current appearance. Joplin architect, Truman Martinie was the architect of the remodel. Clare was a native of Baxter Springs and as a young man worked with his brother drilling water wells. His excavation experience soon drew him into the dominant regional industry of lead and zinc mining, which became his primary career. He was an active community member, serving first as a state representative and later as a Kansas State Senator, representing Cherokee County. He also served on the local school board for a number of years. Glad Robinson Youse was a native of Miami, Oklahoma. She was an internationally known composer, writing over 250 songs and choral works in a 35 year span. | |
