Historic Function Remarks:	Gilchrist owned M. W. Gilchrist and Company, dealers in Pine Lumber, glazed sash, doors, mouldings, hinges, pickets, lath, etc. (as noted by an advertisement in the Emporia newspaper). Property also contained 600 fruit trees and a gable-roof barn. The property is described in detail in the July 21, 1876 issue of the Emporia newspaper. Rendering of property is recorded in "An Illustrated Historical Atlas of Lyon County, Kansas" (1878).

Condition Remarks:	Steel Siding added in 1979, removed in 2011. Permastone may have been added at that time, too. Wood siding on wood frame; stone foundation; asphalt shingle roof. House was raised about 2ft (the equivalent of 3 concrete blocks) in the 1920s. These blocks are set atop the original stone foundation and the wood joists of the main level sit atop the blocks.

Appears on the 1878 atlas image of this property; most of the current barn was rebuilt in the last few years due to wind damage. ca1930s: Stone driveway and pedestrian entries; stone well to the SW of house; stone bar-be-que grill to the east of the house with the date of 1935 etched in the mortar on the south face; concrete pond to the south of the house. 1970s garage. Also, one pear tree still exists that began as a cutting from one of the original 600+ fruit trees on the property.
