Condition Remarks: | This tall one-story, rectangular building has stucco walls and a barrel vault roof. Spanish Mission Style elements include red clay tile at the parapet ends, the arched parapet over the hangar opening on the front (south) facade, and buttresses on the east and west sides of the building. Sliding metal hangar doors cover the wide opening at the south end of the building. The west elevation has stucco pilasters dividing the facade into seven bays. Each bay contains a tall, multi-light, steel window with pivoting sashes. The east facade has a lower one-story wing with buttresses dividing the facade into eight bays. Each bay has single or paired multi-light steel windows or a single door. The north facade has five single windows. |

General Remarks: | Building 9 is eligible for listing in the National Register under Criterion A for TRANSPORTATION for its association with the development of the aviation industry in Wichita as the hangar for the Stearman Company. Building 9 is also significant under Criterion C for ARCHITECTURE as an excellent example of a commercial aircraft hangar built in 1929. It has Mission/Spanish Colonial Revival details such as a stucco facade, buttresses, and barrel clay tiles at the north and south parapets. A barrel-vault roof covers the wide open space of the hangar and sliding metal hangar doors cover the wide opening in the south facade. Building 9 is the only extant building on McConnell Air Force Base that was constructed for the Wichita Municipal Airport.
